Vienna is tightening security around the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) — and the first restrictions have now officially come into force. Although authorities had signaled extensive measures in recent days, the initial bans announced on Friday afternoon are somewhat narrower than expected.
Restricted Zones Around the Stadthalle
A formal exclusion zone will apply on:
- Tuesday, May 12 (First Semi-Final): from 10:00 until Wednesday, 03:00
- Saturday, May 16 (Grand Final): from 10:00 until Sunday, May 17, 03:00
These timeframes cover both scheduled performances of Israeli contestant Noam Bettan and his song Michelle. Authorities anticipate Pro-Palestine protests during these appearances.
Anyone entering the restricted area without proper authorization — defined precisely in the official ordinance — commits an administrative offense. Fines can reach €1,000 for a first violation and up to €4,600 for repeat offenses.
Drone Ban and Search Orders
The Vienna police have also issued:
- A drone prohibition zone within a 1.5‑kilometer radius of
- the Stadthalle,
- Rathausplatz, and
- the Praterdome.
- Search orders for all three locations, valid from Sunday, May 10, 08:00 until Sunday, May 17, 24:00.
These measures aim to prevent disruptions and ensure crowd safety during one of Vienna’s largest international events.
Strict Bag Policies
On the semi-final and final days, the Stadthalle will enforce a “No-Bag Policy”:
- Only transparent bags
- No larger than A6 format
The same rules apply to the ESC Village at Rathausplatz, where 15,000 to 30,000 visitors are expected daily.
Traffic Disruptions Across the City
Several major road closures will affect traffic throughout the week:
- Hütteldorfer Straße (between Gürtel and Vogelweidplatz):
Closed continuously from Monday, May 11, 17:00 until Sunday, May 17, 03:00. - Ringstraße closures on May 10, 12, 14, and 16
between Operngasse and Schottengasse, each day from 12:00 to 01:00.
Traffic will be rerouted via Operngasse–Getreidemarkt and the Zweierlinie. Authorities note that additional closures may be implemented if necessary.
What Visitors Should Keep in Mind
- Expect tight security checks and longer waiting times.
- Plan routes in advance and use public transport where possible.
- Follow police instructions — violations can be costly.
- Keep updated through official channels, as additional measures may be introduced at short notice.
